A Better Veikkaus for the climate 2023–2035
At Veikkaus, we want to be part of the solution – not the problem. That’s why we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and doing our share to slow down climate change. Our goal is clear: we aim to become a carbon-neutral gaming company by 2035.
In 2023, we updated our environmental program and created a climate roadmap to guide us towards our emission reduction targets. This roadmap covers the entire value chain – from our own operations to the lifecycle management of our products and services, and all the way to the responsibility of our partners.

Supplier survey on carbon footprint
We are currently developing our emissions calculation with the goal of making it more accurate and reliable. To support this work, we are sending a carbon footprint survey to some of our suppliers. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the availability and quality of emission factor data related to our procurements.
We calculated the carbon footprint of Lotto
We are one of the first gaming companies in the world to calculate the carbon footprint of Lotto. Climate assessments of our games are an important part of our journey toward becoming a carbon-neutral company.
Science-based climate targets
Our climate action is not based on guesswork – it’s based on science. We are part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and have set science-based emission reduction targets, which have also been approved by SBTi.
What does this mean in practice?
- We will reduce our own operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 42% by 2030 (compared to the 2022 baseline).
- We will reduce our value chain emissions (Scope 3) by 25% by 2030.

Did you know? Veikkaus' Climate Action Guide – For Better Gaming and the Planet is the first climate guide for the money gaming industry, created by our own sustainability team. It offers tips and concrete solutions for other gaming companies to help reduce the climate impact of game development.
Our carbon footprint – where do our emissions come from?
Good climate work starts with understanding where your emissions originate. That’s why we calculate our emissions in line with the GHG Protocol to know our footprint.
Currently, our biggest emission sources (Scope 1 and 2) are related to transportation and the electricity and heating used in our properties. However, 98% of our total emissions come from our value chain (Scope 3) – for example, from the ICT services we purchase.
As our data improves, our value chain emission estimates will become even more accurate – and at the same time, we encourage our partners to develop their own sustainability efforts. Emission calculations are done together with our expert partner and are also externally verified. You can find the results each year in our Sustainability report.

2020
Starting emissions calculations
- We began calculating our emissions to better understand the climate impact of our operations. By identifying and recognising our emission sources, we can take meaningful action to reduce them. Emissions calculation is a strategic choice that guides our operations and decision-making.
- Our reporting follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
2021
Commitment to SBTi targets
- In 2021, we joined the international Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
- We are committed to reducing the climate impact of our operations through concrete emission reductions – both within our own activities and across our entire value chain.
2023
Veikkaus SBTi targets approved
- Veikkaus was among the first in the global money gaming industry to set science-based emission reduction targets, and the first major Finnish gaming company to have its targets officially approved by SBTi.
2024
Publishing the industry’s first climate guide
- Our in-house sustainability team created the Climate Action Guide – for Better Gaming and the Planet, bringing together best practices to support more climate-conscious game development across the industry.
Calculating the carbon footprint of Lotto
- Veikkaus is one of the first money gaming companies in the world to calculate the carbon footprint of Lotto.
- Game-specific climate assessments are an important part of our journey toward carbon neutrality.
2025
Calculating the carbon footprint of scratch cards and eInstants
- We carried out a lifecycle carbon footprint assessment for cardboard scratch cards and eInstants.
- Our aim is to understand the negative climate impacts of our products and, through that, identify potential emission reduction opportunities during their lifecycle.
Calculating the carbon footprint of slot machines
- We continue to assess the climate impact of our products by calculating the carbon footprint of our slot machines.
- Understanding these impacts allows us to improve our operations and reduce the lifecycle emissions of our products.
2030
Target year for the SBTi commitment
- We aim to reduce our operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 42% by 2030 (baseline year 2022).
- We also aim to reduce value chain emissions (Scope 3) by 25% by 2030.
