Working towards a safer gambling environment

We have been working consistently to build a safer gaming environment that helps our customers monitor and control their own gambling. We offer our customers a wide range of gambling control tools, both mandatory and voluntary, set by the customers themselves, including gambling restrictions and self-exclusions. Our customers can monitor their play with a gambling account summary – an important part of preventing gambling harm.

Over 6000 care calls

All Veikkaus games require player identification. This allows us to detect risky gambling behavior and help prevent gambling-related harm. We direct care measures, gambling control messaging, and marketing restrictions to players whose risk level has increased. Through these actions, we encourage customers to reflect on their gambling and to make use of available control tools.

Some customers receive targeted care messages while using our services, and we also make over 6,000 care calls each year. As younger adults are at a higher risk of developing gambling-related problems, we pay special attention to active players aged 18–24 when directing our care efforts.

By requiring identification and expanding the range of control tools, we help prevent gambling-related harm and build a safer gaming environment for everyone.

Age-limit and supervision for gambling

Veikkaus games are for adults only

Gambling is for adults – and for good reason. At its best, gambling can be a fun pastime. But for some, it may bring more harm than enjoyment, and young people are particularly at risk.

The legal age limit for gambling in Finland is 18. At all points of sale – both in our own gaming arcades and at our partners’ locations – trained staff ensure compliance with the age limit, which is actively monitored. We apply a reference age of 30, meaning we check the ID of anyone who appears to be under 30.  

With mandatory identification, all gambling – both online and in retail locations – requires player authentication. However, this does not remove our responsibility, or that of our retailers, to ensure that underage individuals do not access games by using someone else’s identification.

The 18+ age label is clearly visible on all our products, advertisements, and points of sale, as well as on veikkaus.fi and in our app. Gaming areas with slot machines at retail locations are also marked with the 18+ label.

  • We check ID from anyone who appears under the age of 30.
  • We strengthen age limit enforcement through mandatory identification.
  • We monitor the effectiveness of age control.
  • We block play remotely if necessary.
  • We communicate actively about the age limit.  
     
Training for Veikkaus staff and retail sellers

We ensure that both our own employees and the personnel at our retail partners are well trained in responsible gambling sales. All game sellers complete a course on responsible gambling sales. The course covers a wide range of topics and exercises related to age limit enforcement, prevention of gambling-related harm, fraud and money laundering prevention, personal data protection, and the principles of responsible marketing and sales.

Veikkaus and each point of sale offering gambling services are required to prepare a self-monitoring plan to ensure compliance with supervision practices and principles for preventing gambling harm.

The self-monitoring plan includes, among other things:

  • How staff are instructed and trained
  • How age limit control is implemented
  • How gambling supervision is conducted at the point of sale
  • What actions are taken to prevent money laundering

In addition, all gaming locations, arcades, and the Casino provide informational materials and contact cards for Peluuri, a support service for gambling problems. Staff are trained to assist customers with gambling-related problems and to guide them in using gambling control tools.

At Casino Helsinki, we offer tailored tools to support responsible gambling. All play takes place with mandatory identification, and our Know Your Game customer model supports safer gambling. You can read more about our Casino’s responsibility measures on the Casino’s website.
 

 

Our proceeds help fund the prevention of gambling-related harm

Veikkaus is Finland’s own gaming company, with a unique mandate to offer gambling services under an exclusive license – always responsibly. 

Veikkaus’ proceeds help fund gambling harm research and treatment development coordinated by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, as well as the operations of Peluuri, which provides information and support services for players.
