“Climate targets don’t happen without accurate data”

Veikkaus is strengthening the tracking of procurement-related climate impacts

We are committed to achieving significant emissions reductions by 2035. Reaching this goal requires a much more detailed understanding of where emissions arise in our operations. Veikkaus’ Corporate Responsibility and Procurement units have therefore launched a joint initiative to improve the monitoring of the climate impacts of our procurement.

Most of our climate impact comes from the procurement of materials and services, i.e. so-called Scope 3 emissions. These are indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the value chain – emissions generated by companies that supply products and services to Veikkaus.

– Now was exactly the right time to specify the climate impacts of our procurement, as regulation is tightening and interest in emissions and environmental impacts is growing among many stakeholders. To genuinely manage and reduce our climate impact, we need more accurate information about our supply chain and to understand where our leverage is greatest. We also wanted to start a dialogue with our suppliers and make our cooperation more transparent, says Veikkaus Sustainability Specialist Hilla Kytökari.

Scope 3 emissions are typically challenging to calculate, as companies may purchase hundreds or even thousands of different products and services, and the relevant data is spread across many suppliers. At Veikkaus, emissions from procurement have previously been estimated using generic emission factors based on euros spent. This method provides an overall picture, but the impact of individual actions can easily remain hidden.

– For example, a more expensive but climate-friendlier purchase can appear to have higher emissions than a cheaper alternative, even if the real impact is the opposite. We needed more accurate data so that we can compare options more fairly and target our actions where they have the greatest effect, Kytökari explains.

Supplier survey as a concrete basis for development

To improve the accuracy of emissions accounting, last autumn we assessed the readiness of Veikkaus’ supplier network to provide emissions data related to their products and services. The assessment was carried out as a supplier survey, which was designed and analysed in cooperation with Sitowise.

Based on the survey results, Veikkaus has drawn up both short- and long-term measures to further refine procurement-related emissions accounting and support emissions reductions already now. In the short term, we will make better use of existing emissions data and focus cooperation on those suppliers whose capabilities are already more advanced. In the longer term, our goal is to increase comparable emissions data and integrate it systematically into tendering processes and procurement decisions.

– For the first time, we now have a compiled and comparable overall picture that enables us to steer procurement more systematically and strengthen dialogue between suppliers and our contract owners. This helps us identify who we can move forward with quickly and who will still need support, says Procurement Senior Specialist Seija Jaakkola.

– The best part of this work has been realising that we are not doing this alone – our supplier network also wants to move in the same direction. The more accurate the data we have, the better decisions we can make together, Kytökari says.
