The team’s cat lady and brave Captain Haddock
What do you mean by "cat lady"? I’m a proud owner of two Ragdoll cats, while most of my teammates are dog enthusiasts. As for the brave Captain Haddock, that comes from my role as the health and safety representative, where I boldly bring up various topics for open discussion. But let me also share a bit about my work as a sales coordinator and my thoughts on the team and my colleagues.
My career at Veikkaus began in 1991 when I started as a maternity leave substitute for an office secretary. I clearly remember coming to the job interview from the countryside and jumping into a taxi at the train station. When the driver found out my destination, he immediately asked, “How much did you win?”. Veikkaus was already a well-known player in Finnish society back then, and it still is today. Around the same time, I had the option of getting a Green Card for the United States or pursuing a dream of moving to Australia, but I fell in love and stayed in Finland, and I’ve never regretted that decision.
Getting a job at Veikkaus felt great. I was confident because I had just graduated, and my recent training provided me with a solid foundation for my new responsibilities. After the maternity leave substitute role ended, my career has progressed through various positions in financial management, product management, and customer service, leading to my current role as a game coordinator. In the monitoring center, my teammates and I make sure that the games run smoothly and that everything in the gaming halls operates in compliance with the regulations. In my job, I analyze data that I retrieve from various systems. Luckily, automation helps manage and organize the flood of information. In addition to monitoring, we also respond to all inquiries from authorities that come our way.
The meaning of work and values at the core
The content of my work and the opportunity to work independently are important to me. I am motivated by the feeling that I am doing meaningful work—work that matters. Veikkaus is a significant player in Finnish society, and I want to work for a company that contributes to Finland by paying its taxes here. As a game coordinator, I work with data, and the role of health and safety representative adds a nice variety to my tasks. In this role, I get to work with people: meeting different individuals and improving the well-being of all of us at work.
I feel that at Veikkaus, I get to do work that aligns with my values. The values that are closest to me are responsibility and courage. Responsibility is especially evident in my work as a game coordinator in preventing money laundering, and courage is reflected in my role as a health and safety representative. I enjoy working with people and helping them, so a strong team spirit is also very important to me. While working remotely, I miss physical interactions, especially at staff events where people from different parts of the company come together.
Well-being connects
My work and free time are closely linked through well-being, a theme that has been close to my heart for a long time. I have completed Business Coaching and Shiatsu Master training, and I am also interested in various complementary alternative therapies. With the knowledge gained from these courses, I aim to bring a well-being perspective into the workplace.
In my free time, I’m a bit of a DIY enthusiast, especially when it comes to renovation projects. I have a “craft project” in Savonlinna that has lasted for 30 years. The skills I’ve developed in my professional life have been useful in managing a large renovation project, and on the other hand, the people skills I’ve honed in my free time have helped me meet different people and handle emotions during workplace transitions and turning points.
Life can sometimes unfold in a way that you end up enjoying your job more than you planned. For me, Veikkaus has allowed me to express myself flexibly, and I truly feel that this is a workplace full of opportunities. Could it be that way for you too?
